SUPPORT THE TROOPS  WITH VFW ‘MARCH MADNESS’

             PACKING EVENT ON  FEBRUARY 10

GLASTONBURY,  Conn. – VFW  Post 7659 and its Women’s Auxiliary are sponsoring a collection  and packing event on Sunday, February 10, 2013, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at South  Congregational Church, 1301 Forbes Street, East Hartford. The theme of the event  is “March Madness” and is designed to support our soldiers by sending a little  bit of home to those serving our country overseas.

Donations  of snack foods, such as small packages of potato chips (less than 6 ounces),  boxes of crackers, dips (in non-breakable containers), cookies and other fun  foods are needed. The goal is to ship care packages that will allow our troops  to enjoy watching “March Madness” basketball.

The  group also needs donations of socks. All items must be dropped off between 12  and 1:30 p.m. St. Patrick’s Day cards and spring cards and pictures are also  encouraged. This is a perfect project for youth groups.

Volunteers  are needed from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. to sort and pack donated items.

The  VFW has purchased a number of tickets to the church’s chili cook-off for  volunteers to enjoy, starting at 11:30. Volunteers should sign in with the VFW  to receive a free ticket to the event.

“This  is a small way that we can say thank you to our many devoted volunteers. The  church’s cook-off is always a fun event,” said Frank Forrest, who organizes the  packing events.

Monetary  donations are also needed to defray the costs of postage. It costs approximately  $15 to ship each 25-pound box. The total shipping bill usually comes to more  than $1,000. Checks  should be sent to: VFW Post 7659, c/o Frank Forrest, 165 Maple Street, East  Hartford, CT 06118.
